History and OrganizationChildren's Literature New England, Inc., is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3). CLNE was established in 1987 by the former founding director, associate director, and professors of the Center for the Study of Children's Literature at Simmons College to pursue the aims of literature education without institutional impediment. Children's Literature New England founding board members included Barbara Harrison and Gregory Maguire (codirectors); Ethel and Paul Heins, Betty Levin, Jill Paton Walsh, and John Rowe Townsend. Paul and Ethel Heins died in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Betty Levin resigned in 1997; Virginia Golodetz, who served for eleven years, resigned in 2006.
